The Spirit of Your Father.
Morning Devotion/ Theme: Holy Spirit/ “The Spirit of Your Father.”
Titles Applied to the Holy Spirit/ 79B-003, (Matthew 10:20)/ Key Text: “For it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father who speaks in you.” (Matthew 10:20, NKJV)
REFLECTION: Mathew chapter 10 discusses the following: The Twelve Apostles (1-4); The sending out the Twelve (5-15); Christ warns of the coming persecutions (16-26); Jesus teaches the Fear of God (27-30); We ought to confess Christ before Men (32-33); The gospel of Christ brings division (34-38); A Cup of cold water (40-42).
In this particular chapter, Christ warns that enemies of God will hate the disciples. There are four categories listed here: (a) Religious persecution — They will be handed over to courts and beaten in synagogues, (Mt. 10:16–17); (b) Political persecution — They will be called before governors and kings; this will give them a chance to witness, (Mt. 10:18); (c) Family persecution — Family members will betray each other, (Mt. 10:21); (d) General persecution — Everyone will hate them because of their allegiance to Christ, (Mt. 10:22–23).
DEVOTIONAL IMPLICATION: “Jesus told the disciples that when (not “if”) they were arrested and handed over to the authorities, they should not worry about what to say in their defense. The thought of being brought before Gentile rulers terrified any Jew, but Jesus warned his disciples not to be afraid. What you are to say will be given to you at that time—God’s Spirit would speak through them.” [Bruce B. Barton, Matthew, Life Application Bible Commentary, (Wheaton, IL: Tyndale House Publishers, 1996), 207].
THE GOSPEL’S VOICE: Apostle Paul says, “Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.” (2 Timothy 3:12, NKJV). Beloved, persecutions are coming for God’s people. In the Beatitudes, Christ says: “Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake” (Mt. 5:11). Here is the good news! The Spirit of God will help us! We have nothing to worry about, because, He will give us the right words to say! The Holy Spirit will be a “defense lawyer” coming to our aid.
Today’s message is very simple: Do not be afraid, you have an Advocate, a Teacher, a Counselor, a Helper by your side. “But when they deliver you up, do not worry about how or what you should speak. For it will be given to you in that hour what you should speak; for it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father who speaks in you.” (Matthew 10:19–20, NKJV)
Have a Blessed Day: “So the Lord said to him, “Who has made man’s mouth? Or who makes the mute, the deaf, the seeing, or the blind? Have not I, the Lord? Now therefore, go, and I will be with your mouth and teach you what you shall say.”” (Exodus 4:11–12, NKJV)
