Following Christ.

Following Christ/ The Believer’s Conduct & Attitude, Lesson 4

Key Text: “For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps” (1 Peter 2:21, NKJV)

Heart Questions: What does it mean to be a followers? Why should we follow Christ? What Example did Jesus Christ set for us? What does it mean to be a follower of Christ today?

A ‘follower’ is an adherent or devotee of a particular person, cause, or activity. A follower is someone who agrees with the beliefs of others, or listens to the lead or commands of another. In social media, a follower is someone who has subscribed to an account in order to receive all the updates.

There are four types of followers: Active Followers (positive, effective, and independent thinkers); Alienated Followers (non-active, independent thinkers); Pragmatic Followers (they remain in the background of the group); Passive Followers (for example, the sheep).

You know, everyone follows something: money, career, friends, popular culture, family, selfish desires, or God. We can only follow one thing at a time (Mat. 6:24). God states we are to have no other gods before Him (Exod. 20:3). To truly follow Christ means we do not follow anything else, but Him alone. That’s why He taught us, saying: “If any person wills to come after Me, let him deny himself [disown himself, forget, lose sight of himself and his own interests, refuse and give up himself] and take up his cross daily and follow Me [cleave steadfastly to Me, conform wholly to My example in living and, if need be, in dying also].” (Luke 9:23, AMP)

Christ desires that we be ‘Active Followers” – fully engaged in everything He has taught/ shown us. Remember, He is the kephalaion (Heb. 8:1) – the head, the principal, the main point of the Scriptures). He is our archegos (Heb. 2:10) – the Pathfinder, the Leader, the Author of our salvation who has gone before us. He is our GPS who is pulling us back to Him whenever we miss the mark, lost and stranded, saying, “This Is The Way Walk In It” (Isa. 30:21). He is our High Priest (Heb. 2:17; 4:14; 7:25; 8:1) But above all, He is our God, Our Creator, Our Redeemer! Beloved, one of these days, Jesus shall appear in the clouds of the air to take us Home. I want to tell you this: It’s worth following Christ. When was the last time you seriously considered following Him?

What Example did Jesus Christ set for us? First of all, Christ was a Humble Servant! He came to serve, not to be served, but “to give his life as a ransom for many” (Mt 20:28). He came to be a blessing to all humanity: He identified the people’s needs and attended to those needs – (the sick, the needy, the lost, etc.). He was baptized (showing us an example). He taught the Gospel –(bearing witness of the Truth, and teaching men what they must do to inherit the Kingdom of God). He was a man of Prayer (Mt 4:1-11: Jn. 7:53-8:1; Lk 6:12; Jn 17; Mt 26:36-46). He overcame the world; that is, He bridled every passion and had risen above the carnal and sensual plane so as to live and walk in holiness, as guided by the Holy Spirit. But above all, “He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.” (Philip. 2:8). What wondrous love? What perfect example of total obedience to the Father?

Action Step: My dear friends, that exactly what we ought to be doing if we claim to be Christ’s followers. We ought to conduct ourselves in a manner worthy of our calling (Eph. 4:1; Philp. 1:27). We ought be holy as He is Holy. We ought to follow His footsteps: obeying, praying, serving, witnessing, making difference in peoples lives, and pointing them to the Savior and His Kingdom.

The Gospel’s Voice: What does the LORD say to me today? – My son, consider the humiliation and the condescension of the Incarnation: Jesus Christ, the Creator of Heavens and Earth, God in Human flesh, came as a humble Servant in order to reach you, to die for you, and to redeem you! I am inviting you to consider Jesus today: follow His footsteps; repent your sins; accept Him as Lord and Savior and get ready for His soon Coming. Would you?

The Appeal: “Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our confession, Christ Jesus,” (Hebrews 3:1, NKJV) “Imitate God, therefore, in everything you do, because you are His dear children.” (Ephesians 5:1, NLT)

Commitment: (SDAH 623) – “I will follow Thee, my Savior; Wheresoe’er my lot may be. Where thou goest I will follow; Yes, my Lord, I’ll follow Thee” — [Chorus] “I will follow Thee, my Saviour; Thou didst shed Thy blood for me; And though all men should forsake Thee; By Thy grace I’ll follow Thee.”
