Lesson # 2: God Dispenses All Good Gifts.
“Or what man is there among you who, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!” (Matthew 7:9–11, NKJV)

There are many gifts, temporal and spiritual. We shall discuss “spiritual gifts” in a different segment. But all gifts are freely given to us by God. In this text, Christ contrasts earthly parents’ love and our heavenly Father’s infinitely greater love (cf. Mt. 6:30). Earthly fathers are sometimes evil, harmful, threatening, dangerous, forsaking, and deserting. But not God. God knows exactly how to meet the need of the son or daughter who is forsaken or deserted (Ps. 27:10).

The phrase “you then, who are evil” refers to the sinful human condition compared to that of a holy God. Here we glimpse the heart of God the Father—He gives what is best to His children! God is not selfish, biased, or stingy. His children don’t have to beg when they come with their requests. In fact, they must go to Him “boldly” (Heb. 4:16) because He is a good, merciful, and loving Father who understands, cares, and is eagerly willing to give good things to those who ask Him.

If sinful, earthly parents can be kind enough to give to their children, imagine how kind and generous God can be. Remember, He is the author of kindness! The problem is this: our faith is often weak, and we do not avail ourselves of God’s rich, glorious promises! Beloved, it is God’s nature to bestow His gifts upon us. All-wise and all-powerful, He will give all who ask in faith liberally. He is more merciful, tender, and loving than any earthly parent.

Application: Pray, “casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.” (1 Peter 5:7, NKJV). To cast your burdens upon the Lord means to transfer ownership of your worries to Him and watch Him work it through—You will never regret it. Blessings!

Today’s Promise: “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” (Matthew 6:33, NKJV)
