The Triumphal Entry

Early Morning Worship/ Theme: The Triumphal Entry/ Main Passage: Mark 11:1-11.

Key Text: “Then those who went before and those who followed cried out, saying: “Hosanna! ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’ Blessed is the kingdom of our father David That comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!” (Mark 11:9–10, NKJV)

Heart Questions: Was this Jesus’ first trip to Jerusalem? What feast was being celebrated in Jerusalem at this time? Why did people put coats and branches on the roadway? What did the people cry out? (v. 9) What Kingdom did the people think Jesus was about to be set up? Why did Jesus welcome this public display of admiration? Why now?

In a Nutshell: “Five hundred years before the birth of Christ, the prophet Zechariah thus foretold the coming of the King to Israel. This prophecy is now to be fulfilled. He who has so long refused royal honors now comes to Jerusalem as the promised heir to David’s throne.” – (The Desire of Ages, p. 569). Jesus’ ride into Jerusalem involved a donkey, some garments and branches thrown on the ground and the praises of some nondescript Passover pilgrims. The Scriptures says: “And many [of the people] spread their coats on the road [as an act of tribute and homage before a new king], and others [scattered a layer of] leafy branches which they had cut from the fields [honoring Him as Messiah],” (Mk. 11:8, AMP) This is the only time Jesus would permit such a public demonstration on His behalf. He did it to force the Jewish religious leaders to act, during the Passover, when it was divinely ordained that He should die. Remember they kept trying this, but in vain (read Mt. 26:3–5). The people cried, “Hosanna! Hosanna means, “Save now, we pray!” Literally, ‘God save the king!’ Beloved, when Jesus rode triumphantly into the city, He proclaimed Himself King! God has a Kingdom, and that Kingdom has a King, His name is Jesus Christ. On this occasion, Jesus not only proclaimed His Kingship, but also signed His own death warrant.

Today’s Promise: “Behold, the days are coming,” says the Lord, “That I will raise to David a Branch of righteousness; A King shall reign and prosper, And execute judgment and righteousness in the earth.” (Jeremiah 23:5, NKJV) “Then to Him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, That all peoples, nations, and languages should serve Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, And His kingdom the one which shall not be destroyed.” (Daniel 7:14, NKJV). Amen.
